Avalon is made up of several specialist image collections encompassing a wide range of subjects including news, music, entertainment, nature, travel, paparazzi, red carpet, celebrity, interior design, architecture, construction, creative, gardens, arts & culture, and environmental issues.

Universal Pictorial Press and Agency (UPPA)

UPPA - Lord Lucan

UPPA is thought to be the oldest independent picture business in the UK, dating back to the early 1900’s. As a member of the Royal Rota, a small group of agencies chosen to represent the media at Royal engagements, it is the photography business of record for royalty, politicians and the judiciary. Updated with over 50,000 live images weekly, UPPA also provides access to content from major global news organisations worldwide. It also has a strong reputation for business and financial stories in the UK, EU and US. UPPA has its own assignment and commissioning division, Avalon Assignment, which works with a network of photographers throughout the UK and across Europe.

 

NHPA (formerly Natural History Photographic Agency)

Widely regarded as one of the best collections of nature and wildlife imagery, built up over 40 years, with contributions from over 150 photographers, including four “Wildlife Photographer of the Year” winners. From simple portraits of global wildlife to striking images of endangered species and their surrounding habitats, NHPA has long been at the forefront of illustrating the reality of the natural world and photographers that have their work with NHPA include hi-speed pioneer Stephen Dalton, Andy Rouse, Martin Harvey, Anthony Bannister, Nigel Dennis, Daniel Heuclin and Laurie Campbell.

Retna Pictures is an established agency with an international reputation for high quality Music and Celebrity photography. Its archive dates back over fifty years and it has a worldwide network of over three hundred contributing photographers. Founded in 1984 by music photographer Michael Putland, the collection now contains over 1½ million digitised images. Retna’s particular strength is Music, and the collection includes unique and iconic imagery of the defining artists of the last five decades as well as current leading acts, captured by legendary rock photographers Paul Slattery, Neil MacKenzie Matthews and Tony Mottram amongst others. Coverage extends beyond music to encompass the entire entertainment industry from studio celebrity shoots to red carpet, and candid photography. Retna represents the work of many highly respected celebrity photographers whose subjects include the cream of UK and Hollywood talent.

Launched in 2000, Red Cover specialises in inspiring home features and a wide range of interior from classic to contemporary, as well as garden and food images. With a reputation synonymous with quality and style the collection includes homes from around the world shot by some of the industry’s leading photographers.

 

Photos Horticultural

Photos Horticultural
One of the world’s leading horticultural picture libraries, with approximately 18,000 images online. Founded by Michael Warren in 1969, one of the collection’s largest contributors, it was acquired by Avalon in 2007. Its wide array of imagery covers all aspects of plants, gardens and gardening, including landscape views, fruit, vegetables, herbs & spices, grasses, insects, pests and plant diseases, as well as trees, shrubs, flowers & plant portraits. There are also practical photos of gardening jobs & day to day garden activities. All images are captured and captioned by specialists in their field both scientifically and generally, making searching the collection easy and uncomplicated. All images are meticulously checked for accurate plant identification before uploading to the site.
